From the Court to the Stage: My Unexpected Senior Year

Oh hey everyone, Saiya here! I’m excited to kick off this blog as a way to share my experiences and reflections from a transformative year of my life.

Just a year ago, I was a high school athlete, the world of sports was my universe. From being pulled up as a freshman to the varsity volleyball team to competing in softball, my identity was intertwined with my athletic endeavors. But sometimes, life throws a curveball, or in my case, several. I found myself not on the varsity softball roster and later cut from volleyball during my senior season, both unexpected turns.

Feeling adrift without my athletics-centered identity, I found myself at the threshold of an unfamiliar journey. Guided by my mother’s encouragement, I stepped into the world of pageants, an avenue I hadn’t considered before. The journey was filled with moments of self-discovery, as I represented my city as Miss City of Fresno Teen and began to connect with my roots by learning my ancestral language, Punjabi.

One key realization that emerged from this whirlwind of change is the pride I take in my dual identity. As a Punjabi American, I realized I am a unique blend of diverse cultures, traditions, and experiences. I am as much at home in the rich tapestry of Punjabi traditions as I am in the dynamic ethos of American life. And it’s this blend of cultures, this celebration of dual identity, that makes me who I am today.

As I transition from high school to college, my vision for the future is to pursue a career in the medical field, specifically as a pediatric anesthesiologist. But I also aim to continue my cultural exploration, enhancing my understanding of my Punjabi heritage while honoring my American upbringing.

I’m excited to share more about this journey with you all, both the struggles and the triumphs. I hope that my story might resonate with some of you who might be navigating your own crossroads, exploring your own identities, or embracing unexpected opportunities. Stay tuned for more!

Here’s to celebrating our unique journeys,

Saiya
